TO BE: WAS/WERE
(+) S + was/were + N/adj
(-) S + wasn't/weren't + N/adj
(?) Was/Were + S + N/adj?

1. Positive (Khẳng định) : S + was/ were + …
• S = I/ He/ She/ It (số ít) + was
• S = We/ You/ They (số nhiều) + were
Eg: - I was at my friend's house yesterday.
(Tôi đã ở nhà bạn tôi hôm qua.)
- They were in London on their summer holiday
last year.
(Họ ở Luân Đôn vào kỳ nghỉ hè năm ngoái.)

.2. Negative (Phủ định) : S + was/ were + not + …
was not = wasn't
were not = weren't
Eg: - She wasn't very happy last night because of having
lost money.
(Tối qua cô ấy không vui vì mất tiền.)
- We weren't at home yesterday.
(Hôm qua chúng tôi không ở nhà.)

. 3. Question: Were/ Was + S …?

Yes, I/ he/ she/ it + was.
No, I/ he/ she/ it + wasn't.
Yes, we/ you/ they + were.
No, we/ you/ they + weren't.

Eg: - Was she tired of hearing her customer's complaint
yesterday?  Yes, she was./ No, she wasn't.
- Were they at work yesterday? Yes, they were./
No, they weren't.

II. Signal words
- yesterday: hôm qua, last (night/ week/ month/
year): tối qua/ tuần trước/ tháng trước/ năm ngoái
- The day before / the previous / in the past
- Time + ago: cách đây (2 hours ago,3 years ago ...)
- giới từ + time in the past (in 1999 ….)
- when: khi (trong câu kể)
- những khoảng thời gian đã qua trong ngày (today,
this morning, this afternoon).
